Player-First

Successful Players

Are Our Measure of Success

Our Player-first philosophy was built on 4, steadfast beliefs:

  • Our players are the reason for our existence.
  • Empowering our players is why we do what we do.
  • Soccer provides a unique and ideal environment for teaching concepts that empower players to create their own success, both on and off the soccer field.
  • It is our responsibility to help our players understand and realize their full potential.
Player-first drives everything we do.

Player-first drives everything we do from how we teach, challenge, and inspire our players, to how we play the game. It is the basis for our values, our culture, and it is the single greatest measure of our success.

Player-first isn’t just a shot in the dark. It is data-driven. Developed by experts in education, child psychology, sports science, fitness, nutrition, and of course, by world-class soccer experts.

Player-first is expressed to our players through three concepts: Passion, Skill, & Character. These concepts provide a framework for players of all ages to understand how they can reach their full potential both on and off the field. Players experience this philosophy throughout their time in our Club via our Player Excellence Program, their team practices, and their games.

Passion, Skill, Character

Passion

Passion is the culmination of fun, fulfillment, and love of the game. Sports psychology studies have shown that if players enjoy practicing and playing the game, they remain engaged, their skills develop quickly, and they embrace even the most difficult challenges. Fun and fullfillment differ by age, but enjoyment of the game is universally important to keep players engaged, grow their confidence, and help them see the long-term value of their effort.

In this way, soccer helps players understand that often, the greatest benefit comes from their long-term, consistent effort – and that long-term effort often provides great benefit to others, as well.

Skill

Playing soccer well requires a wide variety of abilities including physical skill, tactical understanding of the game, and mental awareness. It’s why we employ specific training techniques in our team training activities that help players develop a variety of soccer skills, quickly. It’s also why our Player Excellence program provides multiple, diverse options for every player to experience the sport in ways they enjoy the most. Together, our team and individual training options allow us to develop training and practice regimens that reinforce each player’s existing skills while also helping them develop new abilities.

Character

Modern research shows character correlates strongly to a player’s ability to reach their full potential. It’s why character – integrity, dedication, commitment – is a core element of our Coaching Excellence and Player Excellence programs. Additionally, we believe character is the greatest factor in creating opportunity, overcoming challenges, and bonding teams. Most importantly though, strength of character helps players succeed.

street soccer

In our Street Soccer program, players have the opportunity to create their own teams, make their own calls, and unconsciously develop their technical and tactical awareness–all while expressing themselves with the ball at their feet. We believe players should be able to manage themselves and have the freedom to play, interact, problem-solve, innovate, and take ownership of their participation in the game. Teams are created the day of to promote diversity, and games are played without referees to reinforce positive conflict resolution techniques. Our I-Mentor coaches will supervise each field making sure that players and facilities are safe while maintaining a fun and challenging environment.

PSU’s Street Soccer is open to all 9U to 19U players. Our Old School Street Soccer is open to any parent, soccer coach, and their significant others. Bring the whole family!
